Let’s Plan a Murder Mystery Weekend!

Discover the many ways you can benefit from the Rolling Meadows Library collection with our Let’s Plan a Weekend displays at the Welcome Desk!

We are having small, themed raffles in conjunction with these displays that patrons can enter to win!   Each display also includes bookmarks to take home on how to create your own unique, themed experiences with library materials, which are also on display.  Raffle winners do need to have a Rolling Meadows library card, but everyone can check out the materials or take home a bookmark!

The display which has just ended was “Let’s Plan a Beach Party Weekend!”  Patrons entered to win a prize pack of books, movies, music, and other materials for beginning of summer festivities! Our winner for this prize pack was Glenda D., out of a total of 77 entries.

Our current display is linked to the beginning of our annual Summer Reading Program! “Let’s Plan a Murder Mystery Weekend!” has two different mystery-related prize packs that can be won.  All the materials in the packs are related to our Summer Reading Program theme of “Get a Clue…at the Library!”

Summer Reading Continues!

Every couple of weeks during summer reading, Reader’s Advisory puts out different displays that go with the theme “Get in the Game: READ!” in the area surrounding our desk. Anything that is on the cubes can be checked out, just like anything else in the library!

Right now, there are several different exciting displays to choose from.

“Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Robots,” located on the left book cube, is a wide selections of family dramas and fiction about family relationships.  Check one out to enjoy some (dys)functional families!

“The Game of Life,” located on the center book cube, are titles having to do with each stage of one’s life.  Starting a career, marriage, having a family and retirement are all featured through fiction.

“Spin the Bottle,” located on the CD display cube, is music of all eras.

Our corner display will be rotating through Trivial Pursuit categories every few weeks. Currently it is books related to Arts and Literature.

The film walls feature “Bingo,” films that begin with the letters BINGO, and “Big Bang Theory,” nonfiction films featuring the big universe of science.

All summer long, our new book display and staff (and patron) suggestions display are transformed into “Chance” and “Community Chest.”

Check out the slideshow below for photos of each of these displays.
We encourage you to come in and check out these displays for yourself; you can always take something home!

Summer Reading Displays – July

For the Summer Reading Program, Reader’s Advisory puts out different displays in our area that tie into the overarching summer theme.  For this summer’s theme, “Read to the Rhythm,” our book, music, and movie displays are all about music!  Anything that is on the cubes can be checked out, just like anything else in the library!

Right now, there are five different displays going.

The first book cube is a split between “Good Vibrations,” feel good fiction inspired by the Beach Boys, and “Killing Me Softly,” murder mysteries and thrillers inspired by Roberta Flack’s seminal hit.

The second book cube is a split between “Family Affair,” selections of family sagas, and “Secret Agent Man,” spy novels and thrillers inspired by Johnny Rivers’ classic tune.

The music display is “Sentimental Journey”, a collection of Big Band hits that will transport you back to the 1940s.

The movie display is “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas,” a selection of Christmas movies to tie in with a giveaway in honor of Christmas in July.

The teen display is “I Kissed a Girl and I Liked It,” romantic coming of age novels inspired by Katy Perry’s hit song.

Come in and check out these displays for yourself; you can always take something home!

Right now, there are five different displays going.

The first book cube is a split between “Battle Cry of Freedom,” Civil War fiction inspired by the music of that period, specifically the soundtrack of Ken Burns’ The Civil War, and “The Rake’s Song,” Regency romances with rakes and rogues inspired by the album The Hazards of Love by The Decemberists.

The second book cube is a split between “Yesterday,” selections of historical fiction inspired by the classic Beatles tune, and “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” western novels whose choice were inspired by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jenning’s cover of a seminal country song by Ed Bruce.

The music display is “Stayin’ Alive”, a rip roaring collection of 70s albums that will keep you dancing disco, inspired, of course, by the Bee Gees.

The movie display is “I Will Survive,” a selection of disaster movies inspired by Gloria Gaynor’s hit song.
